BES Challenge

The BES Challenge is a weekly activity which our students can tackle with help from their family or friends. Problems on the challenge may be mathematical word problems, verbal analogies, visual analogies, word puzzles, or anything else we decide to incorporate. The requirement for a problem to be included on a challenge sheet is that it must "strain the brain"!  Students enjoy the challenge and especially enjoy competing for the "Using Your Head Award" which adorns the doors each week of the classes with the highest participation.

Kids Action Packs - KAPS

KIDS ACTION PACKS (KAPs) ARE HERE!  KAPs benefit the scientific, logical and artistic minds at Bow Elementary. Thanks to funding by the PTO, donations of materials from individuals and businesses, and support from the Library personnel, there is a new type of item to check out in the Library. Kids Action Packs (KAPs) are plastic shoeboxes that contain a variety of activities which students may pursue on their own time.   Students check out the kits just as they would check out a book.

Activities in the KAPs range from science experiments with magnets or light to mathematically oriented tangrams to artistic optical illusions. Materials in the kits vary widely from a simple set of cards to lantern batteries, wires, and light bulbs. For the safety of younger brothers and sisters, and for pets, it is imperative that the KAPs have a safe and secure place to reside while they are home with a child.

Continental Math League

Continental Math League (CML) is a nationally sponsored mathematical competition. Students are challenged to solve six difficult problems in thirty minutes. The problems are designed to encourage students to use a variety of problem solving techniques in the areas of mathematical and visual problem solving. Fourth grade students participate in five meets, one each in November, December, January, February, and March. Second and Third graders compete during January, February, and March. The top scorers are honored at the end of the school year. Here are some sample CML problems:

Adam looks in the backyard and sees 4 dogs, 3 cats and 2 chickens. He knows there are 9 heads and ______legs in the backyard.

Three straws are as long as 8 crayons. Four crayons are as long as 11 paper clips. How many straws are as long as 44 paper clips?

Good Luck solving these problems!

Extension Activities

Extension Activities are classes for high ability learners. These classes are continually evolving due to the varied interests and needs of the students.  Students also have the opportunity to participate in independent studies when they have compacted out of a unit in a subject area in the classroom. If a student has mastered the concepts being taught in the classroom, he or she has the opportunity to explore a topic which interests him or her during that time.  Regular sessions in whole class enrichment are also a part of our gifted and talented program. We do a lot of different things here but the goal is always the same: Make sure our kids are thinking!
