BHS B.E.S.T. Curriculum

B.E.S.T., an acronym for "Building Essential Skills for Tomorrow" was created by Bow High School with the idea of expanding an integrated health and physical education curriculum with supplementary skills that students may need as they enter the next stage of their lives.
The result is a 3 year mandatory experience with an option for a fourth year.
Here's how it's broken down.
BEST 9 - The Freshmen Year
In the first year of the program, ninth grade students will be enrolled in an American Red Cross certification course involving Community First Aid and Adult, Child and Infant CPR. The students have an opportunity to certify in all of these areas at the conclusion of the year. An emphasis on organizational skills is placed on the freshmen year experience. Students will participate in a variety of traditional and individual sport activities, adventure based education and fitness activities throughout the course of their first year.
BEST 10 - The Sophomore Year
Throughout the second year of the BEST program sophomore students will be exposed to the realities of drug and alcohol education and human sexuality. BEST 10 is an abstinence based program with the emphasis on the results of drug and alcohol abuse as well as Sexually Transmitted Diseases and pregnancy. An emphasis on understanding differences and conflict resolution are placed on the sophomore year. Teachers take a physiological approach to all subjects. Students also have an opportunity to re-certify in Adult, Child and Infant CPR. Students will participate in a variety of traditional and individual sport activities, adventure based education, and fitness activities throughout the course of their second year.
BEST 11 - The Junior Year
As the final mandatory year unfolds, BEST 11 students begin a personal fitness program designed to educate them in the areas of fitness goal setting, strength training, cardiovascular exercise and nutrition. As the year progresses, the students will look at the prevention of disease and the care of injury and illness. Also, in conjunction with the Guidance Dept., BEST 11 students will begin the college planning process, with emphasis on the application process, essay and resume writing, and school selection. Students will participate in a variety of traditional and individual sport activities, adventure based education, and fitness activities throughout the course of their third year.
BEST 12 - The Senior Year (Optional)
This elective experience is designed to ready seniors for the world ahead of them. Students will be presented with material from various community resources discussing a variety of topics. Topics range from law as it pertains to the transition from adolescence to adulthood, to financial information on credit cards and purchasing/leasing vehicles. Students will participate in a variety of traditional and individual sport activities, adventure based education, and fitness activities throughout the course of their fourth year.
