Turbine Project

  Electricity Generation Assignment
Materials and Equipment:

1-piece of ½” plywood 6" X  6"
1-piece of 2 ½” X ¼” dowel
2-pieces sheet balsa wood
Assorted screws, nails, glue guns and tape
Standard woodworking tools and equipment

 The problem:

Given the instructor supplied materials, design and construct a compressed air (simulated steam) powered turbine wheel that when connected to the test generator, will produce electrical power. The design must be designed to attach to the test generator in some way. All the materials do not need to be used. Your goal is to meet all of the evaluation criteria below. Your goal is to build a turbine that will produce more electricity for a longer time than the other groups. Please feel free to research proven turbine designs prior to construction.

After the solution is produced, write an analysis of the time spent in original design formulation, initial construction, testing, and re-design. This report will contain a complete analysis of the functionality of the turbine and will also address the major problems encountered.

 Objectives:
1. Apply the problem solving method.
2. Produce a CAD drawing of the solution.
3. Demonstrate the safe use of woodworking tools and equipment.
4. Understand how a turbine works to generate electricity.
5. Generate a technical report.
6. Communicate orally with the language of technology.

 Evaluation:
Use of classtime/labtime 40%
Cadkey drawing 20%
Creative use of materials 20%
Written report 10%
Generates power 10%
