leaf Counseling Services at Bow Memorial School leaf

The counseling services at Bow Memorial School provide ALL students with an opportunity to seek additional support during the school day. Counseling services at the middle school level are varied. Our goal, as counselors, is to ensure that students are doing well emotionally, academically, and personally/socially. Students see their school counselors for a variety of reasons, such as academics and grades, anger, anxiety, behavior, eating disorders, family, problems with peers, suicide, transitioning to middle/high school. The delivery of counseling services can be divided into four categories, according to the American School Counseling Association.
RESPONSIVE SERVICES:
  • Individual/Personal Counseling - Parents/guardians and teachers can refer their child/student to see the counselor. Oftentimes, students will self-refer and make an appointment to see their counselor. Parents/guardians can refer by contacting either Mrs. Vincent at 225-3212 ext. 405 or Mrs. Estefan at 225-3212 ext 417. Individual counseling is short term and can offer educational, behavioral, personal and/or social support for those students expereincing some level of difficulty. It is important to note that school counselors do not provide therapy. When necessary, appropriate referrals are made.
  • Group Counseling - Referrals for groups are made by teachers, parents, counselors, or students. Groups may be formal or informal. Formal groups are structured and will either pertain to a specific topic that is effecting the students and/or provide educational information on a specific topic, i.e, anger, social skills, divorce, stress. Informal groups are those where students initiate contact with their counselor and meet with a few friends typically at lunch to discuss the day. All groups meet during the school day at lunch, recess, or study.
  • Crisis Counseling - Counselors will meet with students in crisis, refer to outside agencies, and work collaborativley with the school psychologist to ensure student safety.
  • Consultation - Counselors consult with teachers, parents, and administration to make sure that the needs of students are being met.
INDIVIDUAL PLANNING
  • Individual student planning helps students develop individual personal and academic goals. Within this realm, students may meet with their counselor to discuss the transition from school to school, discuss their abilities and interests, career planning, promotion and retetion information, and high school course selection.
GUIDANCE CURRICULUM:
