  **Completing this form does not mean that you will necessarily invent the product that you intend.  Often the best inventions are by accident.  Your finished product may look very different from what you originally intended or it may solve a different problem.

Please return this form to Mrs. Romano by February 20,  2008 and at that time you will receive an inventor's journal or a Rube Goldberg journal.

Schedule

• Visit classrooms in January to present the Invention and Rube Goldberg process.  Distribute Intent to Invent forms and answer questions.

 

• Return Intent to Invent Forms to Mrs. Romano by February 20, 2008.

 

• BMS Invention Convention will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2008 from  8:30 to 11:00 in the cafeteria.

 

• NH Young Inventor’s Celebration will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2008 at Winnsquam High School in Tilton. Winners from each grade level will attend.

Judging Information for the Invention Category
 

Inventions are judged on the following criteria:

• Originality

• Written description or presentation

• Model or illustration, research performed

• Usefulness

General Categories:

• Most Outstanding - this winner will represent your grade at the State Competition in April.

• Environmental

• Special Needs

• Fun and Leisure Time

• Practical and Useful

• Original and Unique

• Most Marketable

• Inventor’s Choice (to be selected at the BMS Ed. Fair)

Judging Information for the Rube Goldberg Category
 

One individual and one team winner at each grade level will represent Bow Memorial at the State Competition in April.

Judging criteria includes evidence of the following:

• At least four simple machines, such as
  o Lever
  o Wheel and axle
  o Inclined plane
  o Pulley or screw

• Construction – quality counts!

• Written/oral presentation

• Creativity – ingenuity in using everyday materials in unique ways

• Number of steps to complete the task (6 minimum)
  

Entries in each group and at each grade level will be considered for:

Most Outstanding - this winner will represent your grade at the State Competition in April at Merrimack Valley High School

• Best Working Device

• Original and Unique

• Best Design Using Simple Machines

• Best Effort

• Inventor’s Choice (to be selected at the BMS Ed. Fair)

State Level Special Award Categories

Electric Award - recognizing interest in & use of electrical phenomenon & technology (1st - $100 Savings Bond, 2nd - $75 Savings Bond, 3rd - $50 Savings Bond)

Groundwater and Drinking Water Award - recognizing an understanding of groundwater and/or drinking water and issues affecting its use and protection (1st - $100 Savings Bond, 2nd - $50 Savings Bond, 3rd - $50 Savings Bond)

Medical Award - invention that solves a health-related problem (1st - $50 Savings Bond, 2nd - $50 Savings Bond, 3rd - $50 Savings Bond)

Inventors’ Digest Award – invention that solves problems other people face (1st - $100 Savings Bond, 2nd - $50 Savings Bond, 3rd - $50 Savings Bond)

Millennium – invention offers solutions to problems brought about by developments in computer, Internet and telecommunications

Lemelson Student Award – presented to the student who best exemplifies the sprit of innovation and invention

Steve Caney Award – given to an invention of Mr. Caney’s choice
