These two pages will be due sometime next week-I’m waiting to see how long this takes students to do in a reasonable period of time. This type of work is very stressful for many students because it is so detail-oriented, hence I am not setting any hard and fast deadlines right now. Have a good weekend!

Reading

In Reading class we reviewed the elements of plot and how fiction work is organized. There are 5 parts to a plot: the exposition where the author tells the reader when and where the story takes place, who some of the characters are, and what may have happened before the story begins. The second part of a plot line is the rising action that are actually called steps in the rising action. These are the events in the story that have action in them and often pose problems. The rising action leads to the climax which is the scariest, or most important, or most dangerous part of the book. After the climax is the falling action where the author explains what happens after the climax. And finally the resolution (or solution) of the book. All books end. The ending can be sad, funny, and everything in between. Sometimes a book leaves you hanging!

These are also our vocabulary words for this week. A week off from Greek roots!

Science Students worked on a bar graph of the average voltage data collected during the voltaic stack lab.  Students must finish the graphing as homework but coloring is not required before class tomorrow.  Students are required to take part in the, “Title the graph most accurately and succinctly!” challenge for tomorrow.  Students must have their graph title written down on their data table before they enter the room tomorrow.

Students continued finishing up all the work for their portfolios. They also worked on their prefix paper and added prefixes to their online dictionary. There will be a prefix quiz next Friday. Please read the study guide for complete information.

Science Today we discussed the concept of “resistance” in an electrical circuit.  We identified the “resistor” attached to the pig’s battery pack.  We demonstrated the effect of a resistor on a circuit by running our 3 volt pig on 12 volts.  The pig shut itself down as the resistor overheated.  Once the resistor cooled, the pig started again, etc.  We also experimented with different friction surfaces on the feet of the pig toy.

Social Studies Today students completed an outline describing hominid types. (Completed Hominid Type Outline) They also read an article entitled "Find is clue to human origins" published in the Concord Monitor, October 2, 2009.

Language Arts   We reviewed breaking a sentence between the complete subject and the complete predicate.  We also reviewed how to break imperative sentences and interrogative sentences. To practice (and to have fun), try the games found at the sites listed below. You do NOT need to use your goofy user name :).     Part 1- Breaking sentences     http://www.quia.com/rr/533562.html

Math Our primary goal today was to get caught up! Students who have been absent this week worked on missing text work, and all others worked on their 20 Q Review sheets and multiplication packets. Links to the 20 Q Review sheets can be found in yesterday’s update.
Just for fun, we viewed two PowerPoints on “cool stuff” mathematics (sent to us by Quinn’s mom:). Click on these links to view the shows: Beauty of Mathematics and Numbers (saved as PDF pages instead of slide shows).

Science Students made series circuits using: two 1.5 volt “D” cell batteries, a small DC motor, wires, and a standard switch.  Students then added more voltage to the system by cutting one of their wires and wiring in additional batteries.  Students made sure their circuits followed a “positive, negative…positive, negative” pattern.
Social Studies Today students completed the Archaeology Quiz. They also completed a chart describing the discoveries of the following scientists: Eugene Dubois, Raymond Dart, Louis and Mary Leakey, Richard Leakey, Don Johanson, and Tim White. (Textbook pages 51-54)

Language Arts  We read and started to discuss the poem “Still I Rise,” by Maya Angelou.  To hear the poem read by Dr. Angelou, please go to the following link-
                       www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqOqo50LSZ0
As you listen, see if you can hear how the mood changes, look for familiar poetic devices, and try to determine the message behind the poem.
Math Period 1 & 7: We reviewed text section 1-2 in anticipation of our upcoming quiz (most likely next Tuesday). Check out worksheet “Practice/Skills 1-2” on the CD if you have one. This is a great review of the material.
Period 3, 4 & 6: We corrected homework from section 1-4 on Evaluating Expressions. We will have a chapter 1 quiz sometime next week — I’ll keep you posted.
All classes: Multiplication Packet #2 and 20 Q #2 were handed out and worked on in class. These week-long assignments will be due next Wednesday (10/28). I will give copies of the fact packets as students return, but click on these links to download the 20 Q Reviews:  20QAdvanced and 20QGeneral.
Reading In reading class today we reviewed the work in our portfolios and finished any missing test preparation packets that hadn’t been completed. When all the work was accounted for, we added up our points on our checklists and turned them in. After that we worked on our prefix paper for this week. (If needed, here is the prefix paper distributed last Friday. Prefix Paper
Science We tested racing Pig B along a 4.7 meter track.  After three runs the average of Pig B’s elapsed time was 30 s.  We calculated the pig’s (Average Speed m/s) using the formula of 4.7 m / 30 s  =  .157 m / s or 15.7 cm/s  We will next test different friction attachments “shoes” to the feet of the pig to see if we can improve its speed!
Social Studies Today students used the Quiz Wizard to review for the Archaeology Quiz tomorrow. Study Guide

Language Arts    In Language Arts we reviewed the four types of sentences.  Practice identifying the four types by using the following website (you do NOT need your funny user names):
http://www.quia.com/pop/35934.html    Enjoy.  Take it twice if you have time.
Math Periods 1 & 7: We are continuing our work on order of operations, powers, and properties. This information is covered in section 1-2 of your textbook. Last night’s homework came from page 15 in the text — look over these questions if you feel up to it. We are preparing for a quiz (on textbook section 1-2 ONLY), but I will let you know when the date is set.
Periods 3, 4, & 6: We are reviewing order of operations and powers. We have begun working on evaluating expressions, which is section 1-4 in your text. Last night’s homework came from page 16 in the text, and tonight’s was from page 20. Please read these sections and try some of the questions if you feel up to it.
Reading We had our first Literature Circles today. Do not worry if you were out today!
Science Science
We ran a test racing pig along a 2 (m)eter track today.  We recorded Time (s) –vs- Distance (m) in a data table.  We found the average of the pig’s elapsed time after three runs.  We calculated the pig’s average Speed in (m/s).  Please read pp. 269 – 271 in your text to see examples of graphs, data tables, and vocabulary terms.
Social Studies Today students participated in a mock archaeological find. They also reviewed vocabulary related to archaeology by completing a crossword puzzle.
