Read about the author:
Read summaries or look through Book Nook basket to read summaries, located on backs of books, that look interesting to you and your partner.
Select three possible books.  Take your books to a quiet area to discuss and agree which book you will enjoy.
Partners will decide to read a chapter silently or together.   For each chapter, select a new literature circle job.  Follow the Literature Circle Process for tips on reading and discussing books.
If you are taking the challenge, continue the story by writing a "next" chapter.  Click here for ideas.
Create a book jacket that is illustrated with your original work using colored pencil only.  Be sure the jacket includes the title, author, illustrator (your name), with a summary of the story on the back page.  On one inside flap include information about Beverly Cleary.  On the other inside flap, rate the book on a 1 to 5 scale and make a recommendation for other readers.   On this flap justify why Beverly Cleary is an award-winning author.  Back up your statements with facts and/or examples.
Follow the Rubric for all written work and illustrations.
When you have completed your novel, take the Reading Counts Quiz (see Scholastic books on CD) and the Trivia Quiz.
