This castle was the home of the Ryukyu King and the political, economic and cultural center of the Ryukyu Islands until 1879, when Okinawa became a prefecture (state) of Japan. It was destroyed in 1945 in the Battle of Okinawa, then reconstructed in 1992. UNESCO recognized the distinctive culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom as a treasure for all humankind.
