BOW HIGH SCHOOL

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

CONTRACT

Membership in NHS is an honor and continued membership carries with it certain national and local requirements.  Each member must maintain the four standards and must attend all meetings.  The four standards are:

SERVICE:  This involves your commitment to NHS generated community service and fundraising projects.

  • All NHS members are required to log 15 hours of volunteering total each year, 5 of these being tutoring hours and 10 being service hours. At least 5 hours of tutoring/mentoring a year are required, but you may complete up to 10 hours (5 hours carrying over to service hours). The other 10 service hours includes being a member of one subcommittee and helping that committee for a minimum of 5 hours.  Up to 5 hours of the 10 service hours may also be non-NHS generated service hours, for an outside organization. These outside hours must be pre-approved by Colleen and the form filled out that is on our site.
  • Tutoring forms must be given to the parliamentarian by the end of each quarter, so that your hours will be updated. Forms are available on our website.
  • Service activities will be monitored using the Service Sign-in Sheet at each service activity and participation will be monitored by the chair of the event as well as the adviser.
  • Participation is required in our 2 annual fund raising activities: Charity Ball and Carnation sales; all money is donated to a charity chosen by the members.
  • When feasible, an NHS shirt must be worn when participating in an NHS service project.

LEADERSHIP:  This regards your willingness to function as a leader in your classes, the hallways, NHS meetings and events, and the community as a whole.

SCHOLARSHIP:  You must maintain a minimum 3.50 GPA.

CHARACTER:  This involves your positive NHS attitude as observed by your fellow NHS members, NHS advisors, and all members of the school community.

If an NHS member is in violation of any of the four standards above, he/she risks being put on probation and possible expulsion from NHS.  The following list is to serve as a general guide to some instances when a member might be put on probation or expelled.  This list is in no way meant to be final or exclusive.  For further details, please refer to the BHS NHS Chapter Bylaws on our website.

PROBATION:  An NHS member may be placed on probation for the following reasons:

  • Two unexcused absences from NHS meetings. (Refer to the By-Laws for information on excused/unexcused absences.)
  • The NHS member is not projecting a positive NHS attitude in school, at NHS meetings, or at school-sponsored events.  This may be reported to NHS advisors by any member of the school community.  Probationary period for this violation is up to the discretion of the advisor but will be for a period of no less than 30 days. Any subsequent violation during the probationary period may result in expulsion.
  • The NHS member’s GPA falls below a 3.50. If the member fails to bring his/her GPA up to a 3.50 within a time period no longer than one semester, his/her membership in NHS will be terminated.
  • Any failure to meet an NHS deadline.
  • Failure to meet the service and tutoring requirement prior to May 1st for seniors and June 1st for Juniors.

EXPULSION:  An NHS member will have his/her membership terminated for any of the following reasons.

  • A suspension from school.
  • Cheating or plagiarism.
  • Vandalism or hazing at school or in school sponsored activities.
  • Having a GPA lower than 3.50 for more than one semester.
  • Upon the 4th unexcused absence from an NHS meeting.
  • Failure to meet the service requirements prior to June 1st.
  • Any violation of NHS rules while on probation.

Your annual membership dues of $20.00 for first year members, and $10.00 for second year members are due on June 4th, 2008. These dues include local, state and national dues, along with your NHS t-shirt for first year members. Please make checks payable to Bow High School with NHS dues in the memo area.

Regular NHS meetings are held weekly on Wednesdays at 9:15 am in the auditorium. This is the day established by the school for NHS meetings only; no other group meeting is to take place on this day.  On rare occasions, we may need to schedule an additional meeting on a different day or time.  There will also be numerous events at which your attendance is mandatory.
