Introduction: This is an introductory lesson in the use of a spreadsheet application to create line graphs. (Students) As part of a multi disciplinary unit on the Iditarod Dog Sled Race, students will gather data about their musher’s standings over a 2 week period. Data will be entered in a spreadsheet and displayed as a line graph. Students learn to interpret graphs and then apply their knowledge in other graphing situations.
Objective: to teach students how to create graphs using spreadsheets, with appropriate labels while following an Iditarod musher.
| Steps: 1. Using the internet, students will choose a musher to follow through the Iditarod Dog Sled Race. 2. Using the internet daily, students will record their musher’s standings on a record sheet. 3. At the conclusion of the race, teacher will model how to enter date from the record sheet into a spreadsheet application. 4. Students will enter their individual musher’s data into a spreadsheet application. 5. Teacher will model the step-by-step process of creating a line graph from the spreadsheet. 6. Students will then make their own line graphs.
