Purpose of the Unit: This unit is to be a culminating activity of a study of the local community. As part of the early work, students have studied the geography, history and the modern characteristics of their community. In the final unit, students will create in a unique manner their visual interpretation of their community. The goal of the unit is to foster in the students a greater appreciation for the environs in which they live.

Lesson Plan: Approximately three weeks before the unit, students will be instructed to collect three images of their community. These images could be from postcards, books, or photographs (students can take their own photographs for this project). One picture should represent something from the history of the town. One picture should be representative of the modern town. The last picture should be, for the student, an image that is most representative of the community.

Procedures: Standards:

Lesson 1: Students will take the three images of Sunapee and scan them into the Photoshop program. (See attached for scanning instructions)

Lesson 2: Students will begin to manipulate the photos using the Photoshop program.

Lesson 3: Students will finalize their final image of Sunapee having combined the three photos into a collage.

Lesson 4: Using a word processing program, the students will prepare the written portion of the project. The students will first explain why the three photos were chosen and how these photos represent the history of Sunapee and modern Sunapee. The students also needs to include an explanation for the third picture, why it uniquely represents Sunapee to them. The students need to include in the narrative an explanation of how they manipulated the photos to create their collage.

Lesson 5: Students will print their collage and the narrative. They will then create a poster to present their project. The poster will include the original photographs used to create collage. It will also include the collage and the narrative.
