Making a Safer World :

Matthew Bunn is a Senior Research Associate at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Before that he was at the Office of Science and Technology Policy and played a major role in developing U. S. policies in regard to the control and disposition of weapons-usable nuclear materials in the U. S. and former Soviet Union.  He directed a secret study on the topic for President Clinton.  He is a consultant to the Nuclear Threat Initiative.(NTI)   He was formerly at the National Academy of Sciences where he directed a study on the Management and Disposition of Excess Weapons Plutonium.  He has published many articles and is the author or co-author of several books on issues of nuclear disarmament.

Professor Bunn is visiting New Hampshire under the auspices of the NTI and the World Affairs Council of NH.  The NTI has been running an awareness campaign using TV ads, articles, and speakers to focus attention on the threat of nuclear fuel and weapons that have not been destroyed or protected.  The NTI strongly supports the Nunn-Lugar legislation calling for cooperation with the nations of the former Soviet Union in controlling nuclear stockpiles.  Information on NTI can be found at their website - www.saferworld.org.

War Games: Analyzing hard choices concerning U.S. national security

The topic, "War Games: Analyzing hard choices concerning U.S. national security" was presented to an audience of Bow High School students by Robert Gile who has participated in war gaming for a number of years. He described the gaming method and how it is used by the military in developing plans for the use of the armed services. It was a timely topic. Students from 4 other NH locations:

Africa
February 12th, 2003

 Donald Pettersen, Retired Ambassador to Somalia, Tanzania and Sudan, author, cyclist

On February 12th, 2003, Ambassador Pettersen addressed the diversity of Africa and the problems facing the continent drawing on his service in different African nations to illustrate his points.

 

A helpful resource book is: Africa: A Biography of a Continent (New York: Vintage Books, 1998). The book is brings to light "Africa's geology and evolution, the majestic array of its landforms and environments, the rich diversity of its peoples and their ways of life, the devastating legacies of slavery and colonialism as well as recent troubles and triumphs." The Ambassador has written Inside Sudan, (Westview Press, 1999) and Revolution in Zanzibar (Westview Press, 2002).

Ambassador Pettersen has served in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Zanzibar and held several positions in the State Department dealing with Africa.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce
