READING

Our class has just started a free choice selection unit.   Each student had the opportunity to choose a book within their Lexile Reading Range.  During the course of this unit, the students will complete a story pop-out project to highlight their book.

SPELLING

Each student has their own individualized list of Rebecca Sitton Spelling Words.  On a daily basis, they are doing follow-up activities with their words.  On Mondays, they will be test on their words, and then a new list will be assigned to them.

MATH

The class is learning about fractions and their relationship to decimals and percentages.

It is important on a nightly basis that the students review their multiplication facts, as they will continue to take multiplication/division fast facts quizzes at least twice a week.  Each student will graph their scores, so that they can personally see how they are progressing in their mastery of their facts.  Once they have mastered their multiplication facts, they will start the process of mastering their division facts.

In Everyday Mathematics, the class has been working on fractions, decimals, and percents.  They have been learning how to use a calculator to change fractions and decimals to percents.

WRITING

Our class loves to write.  During the course of the day, a lot of writing takes place.  Whether it be individual creative writing or theme writing, the students are constantly using the writing process, utilizing their conferencing and editing skills.  This editing segment is a wonderful follow-up to our "Daily Oral Language" Program.  It allows them to use it in a real-life situation.

SOCIAL STUDIES

On a weekly basis, the class has the opportunity to explore the world of geography through  their "Daily Geography" assignment.  Their knowledge and understanding of the physical and political aspects of the world that relate to geography are increased as they research the answers using various resources.

During the course of the fourth grade, we study New Hampshire History. The class has just finished their unit on  New Hampshire Government. Recently they were able to visit the New Hampshire State House.  They were fortunate to meet one of their representatives and their senator and visit both the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the Executive Council Chambers.

During the rest of April and May, the class will be working on their New Hampshire Famous People Project.  Each student is researching a famous person of their choice and completing a research paper, portrait of their person, and NH Map.  In addition, each student will choose one project component for their presentation which will allow them to highlight their strengths.  These components are Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Creative Written Expression, Technology, and Build and Construct.  The students will be working on this project at home.
